My name is Mhairi Montgomery, and I offer personalised

My editorial projects thus far include managing the production of SCOPUS-indexed journal South Asia; proofreading and copyediting academic work for publication; standardising entries in a heritage database; and translating texts for NGOs, universities, and companies from German into English.

ABOUT

Hi! My name is Mhairi Montgomery. I offer copyediting, proofreading, and German–>English translation services.

I’m originally from the UK but have been living in Germany since 2015. I hold a BA in German from the University of Leeds (1st Class), an MA in Transcultural Studies from the University of Heidelberg (1,2), and an MSt in Gender Studies from the University of Oxford (with distinction).

As a native speaker of English, I am fluent in UK and US English and am confident working in AUS English. According to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, my level of German is C2.

Like my academic interests, my editing experience is wide-ranging. Broadly speaking, this falls within the humanities; to narrow this down, I am most familiar with the fields of cultural studies, post-colonial studies, gender studies, literature, history, and human geography. Most recently, for example, I have worked on an ethnographic study of Tibetan nuns in Nepal; a series of articles discussing the ‘good life’ in global cities; a dissertation about the Dakhni language and regional belonging; and a book chapter on vegetarianism in modern China (see my CV for more details).

I enjoy working on texts that align with my own research interests, but I also find it enriching to learn about new fields. When approaching a text in an area I am unfamiliar with, I make use of my skills as a trained academic to bring myself up to speed with the state of the field, commonly employed terminology, etc.

To ensure I provide you with the highest possible quality, I only translate from German into English. I also only offer copyediting and proofreading services for English language texts. The majority of my clients are non-native speakers, but native speakers, too, can benefit from an extra pair of eyes on their work.

I’d love to hear about your project and to work with you to refine your text. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch!
